French fries may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to your health, but if Buster Biofuels™ has its way, they will contribute to the health of the planet – one school bus at a time. Buster Biofuels has formed THE ALLIANCE with LEGOLAND™ California, the San Diego Padres and hundreds of restaurants, hotels and resorts to collect their grease and oil that get recycled into biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel is a renewable, non-toxic and biodegradable fuel that can power virtually any diesel engine. Now that biofuel is helping to power school buses in the San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD), emissions surrounding the youth are being reduced by as much as 78 percent when compared to petroleum diesel.

Buster Biofuels has formed THE ALLIANCE with LEGOLAND™ California, the San Diego Padres and hundreds of restaurants, hotels and resorts to collect their greaseand oil that get recycled into biodiesel fuel.

SDHUSD is currently powering two buses with a 20 percent biofuel/80 percent petrodiesel (B20) blend and eventually plans to run its entire fleet on B20 biofuel blend. “We want to be at the forefront of green technology,” said Daniel Love, the director of transportation for SDUHSD. “It’s really exciting to work with Buster Biofuels and to know that we are some of the first ones making this change.”

More than just school buses, organizations around San Diego are finding new ways to use biodiesel to reduce their carbon footprint. LEGOLAND California is going to test the waters by powering their hot water power washers with biofuel, but plans to eventually upgrade other equipment in the Park. The San Diego Padres are considering implementing the same program.

“When we were first approached by Buster Biofuels, we saw it as a great opportunity to incorporate what they are doing into our green initiatives here at Petco Park. We are doing everything we can do to recycle, to reduce our carbon footprint, and to be more energy efficient,” said Mark Guglielmo, Vice President of Operations for the Padres.

“Biofuel is the wave of the future,” said Bryan Pastor, LEGOLAND California Support Services Manager. “Our long term goal here at LEGOLAND California is self-sustainability and working with Buster Biofuels is a huge step towards that goal.”

Burger Lounge, Wahoo’s Fish Taco, Hennessey’s Tavern, Oggi’s, Alphonso’s of La Jolla, Las Olas, Wavehouse, Urban Mo’s, Chronic Tacos, La Costa Resort & Spa and Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa are just a few of the local restaurants and resorts that have joined the Buster Biofuels Alliance in an effort to help fuel the school buses and improve air quality in San Diego.

“It’s about asthma, it’s about emphysema and it’s about helping out the kids!” Said Jason Biddle, Chief Sales Officer at Buster Biofuels. “It’s about local companies helping local school buses via Buster Biofuels.”

Buster Biofuels was founded in 2009 by backyard biodiesel enthusiast and former professional skateboarder Buster Halterman, whose background also includes marketing, management and consulting in the action sports industry. Based in Escondido, California, the mission of Buster Biofuels is to initiate, establish and service green initiatives for restaurants and companies in San Diego County that will reduce carbon emissions in our own backyard.

Brazilian Day Parade calls on local San Diego biodiesel provider Buster Biofuels to pull their floats with 100% biodiesel fueled trucks during the parade.

Last weekends 4th annual Brazilian Day Parade San Diego proved, once again, that it is the largest Brazilian festival on the West Coast, with over 40,000 people in attendance. This year’s festival held a sense of pride not only in the culture, but in the message, “Green and Growing… Responsibly”. In order to carry out their message they called on local biodiesel provider Buster Biofuels. The objective was to promote localization and sustainability by using biodiesel as an alternative and responsible fuel source during the festival. In addition to the use of biodiesel during the festival, all the food vendors donated their used cooking oil to be recycled into biodiesel and put back into the local system.

Brazilian Day was a day for the community to come together in celebration of Brazilian culture and fine arts. Their were multicultural arts, crafts and souvenirs, as well as vendors serving up traditional Brazilian dishes and other fair favorites. Two stages hosted live music and dance shows throughout the day, but the highlight of the event was the parade! A cultural extravaganza of contagious rhythms, authentic carnival costumes, colorful floats towed by Buster Biofuels company trucks (fueled with 100% biodiesel), vibrant folkloric dance groups, beautiful samba dancers and stunning capoeira. It was a day to remember, but more importantly the word got out to over 40,000 people about the sustainability of a local alternative fuel source that will reduce carbon emission and create a safer environment for the future of San Diego.

Buster Biofuels was proud to be co-sponsoring the 2011 REVOLT Summer Surf Series down in Crystal Pier, Pacific Beach along with a hand full of local restaurants and vendors. The event fired off early Saturday morning and kept roll’n all day! There was perfect weather, great waves, ripn’ surfers and a really nice crowd.

We were definitely hard to overlook with our new fuel truck boasting a fresh green coat of paint, and a perfectly polished fuel tank, strapped with Buster Biofuels decals. Thanks to the fuel truck, not only were we able to fuel the REVOLT promo truck (a.k.a. BIG BLUE, as seen below), but we were able to connect with people in attendance and create some buzz around the area about Buster Biofuels being in town!

It was a great experience attending RSSS | Crystal Pier and supporting REVOLT and the local talent!
The in-your-face truth about Biodiesel! What is Biodiesel? Why use it? and Why should you care? Featuring Buster Halterman, a local to San Diego, and his passion for Biofuel.

»WHAT IS BIODIESEL & WHY DO I CARE?

By Brian Terhorst
Photos by Rich Van Every

Biodiesel is a clean burning fuel for diesel engines made from animal and vegetable fats
and oils. Unlike petroleum-based diesel, biodiesel is a renewable source of fuel that can be
naturally replenished using local resources. Biodiesel is not made from fossil fuels! It is be
made from renewable resources such as used cooking oil from restaurants which decreases
our dependence on foreign oil and contributes to our own economy. Diesel engines can run
on this stuff with little or no alterations.

SO, WHY USE IT? Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable
resources and has lower emissions compared to petroleum diesel. It is less toxic than
table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar. Not to mention the fact that that regular diesel is
currently over $4.50 a gallon! So, screw the big oil companies. I’m not happy financing gold
plated toilets for those Saudi dawgs.

You may have noticed our company truck ‘Big Blu’ tearing around town. The big Ford F-250
has a 7.4 litre turbocharged V-8 that previously got about 12-15 miles to the gallon and
belched black smoke at every stop sign & traffic light. What a pig! There was no way we
could keep a vehicle like that, and have a clear concience in this world. We wanted other
options! Our choices were, drive the big blue beast off Sunset Cliffs or find an alternative
fuel! We chose the later & switched over to BioDiesel in 2008…we never looked back. subsequently
we noticed the difference and benefits almost immediately.

First off… the smell. We lost the sickening stench of diesel and gave way to a kinder aroma
of…french fries??? Sort of. Second we gained about 4-5 miles to the gallon. The big truck
gets about 20 miles to the gallon now. That’s nice…hmmm? Another benefit, a smoother running,
quieter engine. We received more horsepower without the signature thick black smoke
billowing out of the tail pipe like regular diesel vehicles. (A certified mechanic shared with us
the fact that the natural lubrication of the product will actually extend the life of the engine.
He said we could expect a 500K engine life-span)

Remember we have done no modifications, just regular maintenance on the filters. We often
wondered why every diesel engine isn’t running on Biofuel? Because Big Brother doesn’t
want you to know…well, that, and it’s not readily available.

Unless you make the Biodiesel yourself, it can be difficult to find unless you know where to
look. Yes, I said make it yourself. If you have the time and the space you can actually build a
small refinery to process recycled oil yourself. Personally I have neither the time or the space
to do so. (or the desire to get down and dirty with collections) So, that left me with the other
option, go find someone that distributes it from the pump. There were two such providers in
San Diego County that I use on a regular basis, one being Person Fuels on El Cajon Blvd.
at the 15. The other is Buster Biofuels in Escondido. For slightly less than regular diesel, at
today’s prices, I can pour it in to my own tank just like any other fuel.

Most diesel engines can run on B100 (where, 100 represents the percentage of biodiesel
mixed with the remaining percentage of petroleum diesel) or any blend of biodiesel without
any modifications at all. We use a B20 blend (20% biodiesel/80% diesel) product during the
winter when we might find ourselves driving thru higher elevations. Pure biodiesel, or ‘B100’,
can actually gel and clog fuel lines at near freezing temps.. So to be safe we stick with the
B20 blend in winter months and have been purchasing from Pearson’s Fuel located at 4067
El Cajon Blvd. San Diego, CA 92105. And now there’s a new fuel alternative in town by the
name of Buster Biofuels.

Buster Biofuels initiates, establishes and services “green initiatives” for restaurants and
companies in San Diego County. They reclaim used cooking oil, then convert it to biodiesel
that refuels diesel engines. Restaurants should utilize their free oil collection service which
strives to reduce petroleum dependency and carbon emissions. They have the oil recycled
in to biodiesel fuel which will soon be available for bulk sale in various blends such as B20,
B50 and B99. The higher the “B” number, the more biodiesel in the blend … which translates
in to a friendlier fuel.”

‘Buster’ is the nickname of the founder of Buster Biofuels. Buster Halterman was a top professional
skateboarder for over 20 years . He is originally from an 18 acre farm in Wellsville
(Wherethehellsville?), PA and ironically had a childhood dream of becoming a “gas station
man”.. His wife was the first one to say “… GO FUEL YOURSELF!”

After being a home-biodiesel enthusiast for a couple years, he founded the company in 2009
then recruited his cousin Jason Biddle as a key partner. Their passion for environmental
conservation and vision to create a meaningful company naturally led to the core philosophy
and business model that enabled support for the company’s mission.

As soon as April this year, the company will deliver biofuel to larger fleets and conscientious
companies. Once the plant is operational, it will produce 2 million gallons of biodiesel. In the
end, Buster Biofuels sends a message to the petroleum industry and the world through their
slogan, “GO FUEL YOURSELF!”.
